Welcome
Welcome to the Global Technology 21st Century Tools
for Special Education Workshop Series.
Statistics show that 1 in 3 students struggle with reading traditional text and are
now expected to produce written language work using technology, causing a significant gap
between their vocabulary and their written language skills.
Current trends in technology allow more options than ever before in the areas of reading,
writing and communication. In the Global Technology 21st Century Tools for Special Education
Workshop Series,
Dan Phillips will address many ways to utilize electronic reading sources and multiple tools
to produce written language using technology.
Every student learns differently, particularly
students
with special educational needs. Students learn by
seeing, doing, touching and experiencing, and Dan will demonstrate how to quickly produce
educational content to allow students to read, write and communicate
on any topic using technology.
Over this 3 day workshop series, Dan will focus on a variety of technology
tools that can be used effectively for todays learners and teachers to enrich the
learning experience, including the use of Virtual Reality, Robotics, building Social
Communication using Technology, Effective Use of Google for SEN students and
Augmentative Communication Apps.
We strongly recommend your participation in this workshop series. Our ultimate
the goal is to provide children with special educational needs with greater opportunities
for
inclusion, and empower educators and professionals to be more confident and successful in
supporting
their need.
We are confident that through the use of these tools disscussed in this Workshop Series,
that more students are included in mainstream education and the
wider
community. With your support and presence, together we can
offer the best services to children with special educational needs.
We sincerely look forward to seeing you at Global Technology 21st Century Tools
for Special Education Workshop Series.

Studying for the 21st Century
Have you noticed that “dying” is a part of the word “studying”? Students search for more motivating and independent ways to learn and study. This is particularly true as they increasingly use new technology at home and in school. Yet, rote materials are still used in the classroom that fails to engage students or help them learn critical college-ready and career-ready skills. For many of our students, we often look for ways to help students relate and understand the material more effectively and allow students to not only create their study materials but use them in motivating and engaging ways.
This practical workshop will cover several different platforms, from Chrome to iPad, that you can employ in K-12 settings to help students acquire, record and retain information. These include cloud-based solutions with audio and visual support to help diverse learners better comprehend information and take notes, as well as eTextbook and interactive whiteboard solutions that allow students to share and modify information with educators instantly. The workshop will also highlight effective instructional apps and make-your-own study materials, providing critical training for general and special educators, parents and students. You’ll leave with a firm understanding of how instructional learning must change with today's technology
Virtual Reality: A Whole New World
This workshop will focus on the growing use of Virtual Reality (VR) in classrooms. Terry Heich said in Why Virtual Reality is so Important, “Through the use of digital technology, virtual realities can be designed precisely for human interaction for particular reasons to create experiences not otherwise possible.” Many students, on and off the spectrum, have difficulty relating to content information being presented to them. For struggling readers, it is often hard to have a picture in your head of places and time elements. Students also learn increased empathy or author perspective through visualization strategies such as VR.
This workshop will outline many options for VR that include:
- Regular Seating
- Coffee Break
- Custom Badge
- Exploring another element of the earth (space, underwater)
- Curriculum to address STEM science elements
- Interactive elements for music, art, and design
- Explore potential for literature use.
Augmentative Communication Apps for Autism
Is workshop will focus on a variety of communication AAC apps that have demonstrated an increase in vocabulary and language acquisition for many students who struggle with communicating verbally. We will explore possibilities for three types of communicators: Emergent, Context-Dependent, and Independent. Participants will learn where and when to use each app and have examples. Due to language barriers, we will examine which apps allow bilingual support using recording and translation to other languages.
Reading and Writing – A Whole New World
Current trends in technology allow more options than ever before in the areas of reading and writing. No longer the paper and pencil this workshop will address ways to utilize electronic reading sources and multiple ways to produce written language using standard technology tools.
This workshop will highlight some of the more popular robotics companies that are creating these socially programmable robots. In this hands-on workshop, we will program these elements together to see the life and language strategies that can be targeted. Using this programming as a platform for discussing social scripts and routines will be outlined with examples. Ideas will be shared for how to generalize these ideas into real life situations, including having students program each other in mock situations!
Creating Pathways of Communication through Connection
For children with disabilities, learning how to communicate effectively is the most important childhood needs and right after food, water, shelter and security. When communication skills are developed through individualised play-based learning, the child’s long-term life outcomes and opportunities are exponentially increased. The key takeaways from the talk will be:
- How inclusion includes access to assistive technology.
- The goal of communication is connection. Connection to oneself, friends, family, teachers, therapists, and community….and therefore meaningful connection with their world.
- Light-tech AAC - providing a pathway to high-tech AAC in the classroom, home, and therapy setting.
- Perspectives on disability and the role media can play in shifting culture.
- Gaming and online educational platforms - a new era of possibilities in individualised programming, assessment, reporting and evaluatio
- Multimodal communication - how our children can become flexible, resilient, confident and experience success every day
Read It – Write It – Say It – Do It
It can often seem very confusing and time-consuming to adapt the curriculum for our diverse range of learners. Even though every student learns differently, we all know that students, particularly students with special educational needs, learn by seeing, doing, touching and experiencing. Using only a few technology tools, this workshop will demonstrate how to quickly produce educational content that will allows our students to read, write and communicate on any topic. This workshop will be a hands-on experience, and you will watch content being created ‘written’ in front of you
Robotics: More than just Robots
More and more classrooms and schools are implementing Robotics as a core component of their STEAM teaching. Beyond the strategic thinking elements for cognitive growth, Robotics are demonstrating their use with realizing passions, creating future leaders, teaching students how to communicate across different technology platforms, community involvement and teamwork skills. In this workshop, we will look at many currently available robotic platforms that allow you to not only code movements, but also vocalizations, colours for mood, expressions, and incorporate facial recognition, opening an entirely new world of possibilities for students who need help with social communication. Many of these elements play a role in social development such as proximity, wait time, and following social scripts are making students more aware of their use of these language elements.
Social Communication Using Technology
In our current world, social media plays a significant role in our ability to connect and share. There is often a reluctance to use these tools within teaching, and privacy our students is always a concern. Yet, many of our students and adults strongly rely on different social media elements and will use these tools for a lifetime. In our efforts to provide social communication skills, each platform address another skill and has a distinct purpose. For many of our students, we can address crucial social communication skills through these non-personal venues.
This workshop will focus on the different social media platforms and how to integrate them most effectively into the educational environment. From Facebook to Instagram to Snap Chat to Twitter to YouTube - learn ways that teachers and therapists are harnessing the best of what these platforms have to offer and making them work in the classroom. In addition, we will highlight lots of teacher-based tools that allow educators to safely and effectively change the way our students interact with each other and educational content.
Google: Effective Use for Our Students
The Google platform is one of the most widely used educational tools, yet many teachers are still learning how to harness all of the features that Google offers for maximum learning. This workshop will focus on understanding the elements of Google Classroom and how to effectively set up and integrate google into your classroom. However, you choose to use it. We will share essential apps, extensions and add-ons that every educator should know. We will address students who have challenges in the following areas:
- How inclusion includes access to assistive technology.
- Reading.
- Writing.
- Math.
- Drawing.
- Organization of work.
- Behavioral/Difficulty focusing.
- Editing work independently.
- Taking notes.
- Translating to another language.
