Autism iHelp - Comprehension is an app specifically designed to help children learn to follow directions. The app presents with real life photographs. The child is given one and two step directions verbally that they must follow using the photographs. The directions can also be written on each page. The free app includes one set of one step directions and one set of two step directions. The additional 5 sets for each level cost $3.99 each.
The app offers several setting options which determine if the voice or text is used. Also, the number of targets and answers can be changed from 2-4. In addition, a progress report averages the last 3 performances of each activity.
The app was reviewed with preschool children with autism. Some assistance was needed for their understanding how to tap and drag the pictures. The app does not allow the child to move to the next screen until they have correctly followed the direction given. So the child can take as many times as needed to follow the direction. The children did not use the written instructions as they could not read at this time.
Autism iHelp - Comprehension is recommended for children learning comprehension skills, auditory memory skills and following increasingly complex directions. It is very useful for the therapist in that it keeps a progress report averaging the scores over time.
